Size a track loader by three numbers: rated operating capacity against your heaviest regular load with headroom to spare, machine width against your tightest gate or doorway, and hydraulic flow against your hungriest attachment. Most crews in our territory land on the mid-frame TL8R2 or TL10V2. Step up to the TL12 machines for production grading and land clearing, and down to the 5-foot-wide TL6R for fenced yards and tight access.
The three numbers that size a machine
Rated operating capacity (ROC) is the load the machine is rated to carry safely, and it is the number that should anchor the decision. Take the heaviest material you move on a normal week, a full bucket of wet Piedmont clay, a pallet of pavers, a log grapple’s worth of hardwood, and leave yourself headroom above it. A machine that spends its life at the top of its capacity works harder, wears faster, and feels it on slopes.
Width decides where the machine can physically go. The difference between a 5-foot machine and a 6-foot machine is the difference between driving through a backyard gate and taking the fence down.
Hydraulic flow decides which attachments actually perform. A mulcher or cold planer that starves for flow does not do half the work, it does almost none of it. If land clearing or milling is in your future, prioritize the high-flow packages on the larger frames, which is exactly what Takeuchi’s own product team recommends for clearing work.
A fourth number, operating weight, matters mostly for transport. It varies with cab, track, and attachment configuration, so match it against your truck and trailer using the current spec sheet, which any ACT branch can send you same day.

Small frame: the TL6R
The TL6R is the machine for the places other machines cannot go. At 5 feet wide and under 6 feet 6 inches tall, with a 65.2 horsepower engine and a 1,841 pound rated operating capacity, it fits through gates, into barns and poultry houses, and onto small trailers, while still lifting to 9 feet 6 inches. If your work lives in backyards, orchards, and outbuildings, this is the honest answer, and stepping up in size would cost you jobs you can currently reach.
Mid frame: TL8R2, TL10V2, and the new TL11R3
This is where most crews in the Carolinas and Virginia belong, and it is not close. The TL8R2 pairs a 74.3 horsepower engine with a 2,116 pound capacity and Takeuchi’s quiet-ride undercarriage, and it is the do-everything machine for landscaping and general contracting. The TL10V2 keeps the same engine class but adds a vertical lift path and a 2,522 pound capacity, which earns its keep the day you start loading tandem trucks. The TL11R3 extends the mid-to-large range with a radial design for crews that want more push without moving to the full 12-class frame.
Large frame: TL12R2 and TL12V2
The 111.3 horsepower TL12 machines are production equipment. The TL12R2, radial, is the dirt machine: grading, dozing, and pushing through Piedmont clay all day. The TL12V2, vertical, carries the class-leading 4,107 pound rated operating capacity and the lift path to place it, and with a high-flow package it runs the mulchers and planers that smaller frames starve. If your revenue comes from clearing land or moving serious material every day, the TL12s pay for their size. If it does not, they are more machine than your trailer, your fuel bill, and your jobs need.
Radial or vertical, in one minute
Radial lift arms swing the load in an arc, which gives strong breakout force and the best reach at mid height, where digging, grading, and dumping over a spoil pile happen. Vertical lift arms carry the load higher and keep it closer to the machine at full height, which is what you want loading trucks and handling pallets. Pick by where your load spends its day. The sizing mistakes we see most
- Buying on price alone. The cheapest machine that can barely do the job costs more per hour than the right machine doing it comfortably.
- Ignoring the trailer. A machine you cannot legally tow behind your truck turns every job into a logistics problem. Check combined weights before you fall in love.
- Undersizing flow for the attachment. If a mulcher is the plan, the flow package is the purchase. The carrier is just what it rides on.
- Oversizing for one job a year. Rent the big machine for the big week. Own the machine your normal week needs.
