Compact Track Loader vs Skid Steer: Which Fits Your Crew?

Choose a compact track loader if your crews work on dirt, clay, slopes, or wet ground for most of the year: tracks give you lower ground pressure, better traction, and more working days. Choose a wheeled skid steer if most of your hours are on pavement and concrete, where wheels are cheaper to run and faster to move. In the Carolinas and Virginia, where red clay and rain are facts of life, most crews end up on tracks.

What actually separates them

Strip away the badges and the two machines share almost everything: the same lift arms, the same attachments, the same operator controls. The difference is what touches the ground. A skid steer rides on four wheels. A compact track loader (CTL) rides on rubber tracks. That one change decides how much the machine sinks, how it grips a slope, how fast it wears, and what a year of ownership costs.

Because tracks spread the machine’s weight over a much larger footprint, a CTL pushes down with a fraction of the ground pressure of a wheeled machine of the same size. Lower ground pressure means working on ground that would swallow a wheeled machine, leaving finished grade intact, and staying planted on grades.

Where a compact track loader wins

  • Wet and soft ground. After a week of rain, a CTL keeps working while wheels spin. For crews that bill by the job, the extra working days are usually the whole argument.
  • Slopes and grading. More track on the ground means more grip going up and more stability working across a grade, and a steadier platform for finish grading.
  • Sensitive surfaces. Tracks tread lighter on finished lawns, curbs, and prepared subgrade, which matters on residential and landscape work.
  • Pushing power. With more contact patch, a CTL puts its horsepower into the ground instead of into wheel spin, so it out-pushes a same-size wheeled machine in dirt.

Where a wheeled skid steer still makes sense

  • Pavement and concrete, all day. Hard surfaces chew rubber tracks. If your machine lives on asphalt, wheels cost meaningfully less per hour.
  • Travel speed. Wheeled machines move faster across a big flat site, which adds up on long carries.
  • Purchase and upkeep. A wheeled machine of similar size typically costs less up front, and tires are cheaper to replace than tracks and undercarriage components.
  • Snow and demolition on slab. Both are wheel-friendly work: hard surface, lots of back and forth, and traction aids available for snow.

What it means for Carolina and Virginia crews

Around here the ground votes. Piedmont red clay holds water, coastal soil is soft, and storms can put a site out of reach of wheels for days. That is why the regional market has moved steadily toward tracks, and why Takeuchi, the company that built the first compact track loader, has focused its TL series entirely on tracked machines, from the TL6R up through the TL11R3, TL12R2, and TL12V2.

Cost, honestly

A CTL costs more to buy than a comparable wheeled machine, and its undercarriage is the largest maintenance line you will carry: tracks, rollers, idlers, and sprockets wear as consumables, faster on abrasive or paved surfaces. What the spec sheet does not show is the revenue side: the days a tracked machine works when a wheeled one cannot, the sites it reaches without matting, and the finish work it can self-perform. For most mixed-ground crews in our territory, the utilization gain outruns the undercarriage bill. For hard-surface crews it does not, and that is the whole decision.

Can I run a compact track loader on pavement every day?
You can, but daily work on asphalt and concrete wears rubber tracks faster than dirt does and raises your cost per hour. Crews that spend most of their time on hard surfaces usually come out ahead on wheels, while mixed-surface crews still tend to prefer tracks for everything else they gain.
Are track loaders better on slopes and wet ground?
Yes. Tracks spread the machine’s weight over far more surface area, which lowers ground pressure, improves grip on grades, and keeps the machine working on wet clay and soft soil that would stop a wheeled machine.
