Why size is the first decision

Start with dig depth

Dig depth is the cleanest single number for matching a machine to the work, because trenches, footings, and utility tie-ins are specified in feet, not in tons. Across the Takeuchi lineup, maximum dig depth runs from 5 feet 9.1 inches on the smallest machine up to 19 feet 9.4 inches at the top of the range.

The working rule: choose a machine whose maximum dig depth comfortably exceeds your usual specified depth, not one that just barely reaches it. A machine digging at its limit works slowly, positions awkwardly, and leaves no margin for over-dig and bedding. If your everyday work is four-foot utility trenches, a machine in the middle of the range digs them fast and hauls easily. If you are cutting basements or deep sewer laterals, the top of the range earns its keep.

Then check transport weight

Operating weight decides how the machine gets to work, and transport is where an oversized machine quietly costs the most. A small machine rides on a light trailer behind a pickup most crews already own. As weight climbs, you graduate to heavier trailers, heavier tow vehicles, and eventually to licensing and equipment that make each move a planned event rather than an afterthought.

Be honest about the tow vehicle you actually have, not the one you might buy. Crews that move the machine every day should weigh transport at least as heavily as dig depth, and crews that move between distant jobsites should ask ACT about hauling before assuming they can trailer the machine themselves. Operating weight also matters on the site itself: lighter machines tread softer on finished ground, while heavier machines bring the stability that deep digging and heavy lifting demand.

Factor in tail swing type

Two machines of the same weight can behave very differently beside a wall. Conventional tail swing machines carry a counterweight that extends past the tracks when the house rotates, which buys stability in open ground. Zero and short tail swing designs keep the counterweight inside or nearly inside the track width, so the machine can work against structures, beside traffic, and in backyards without the operator watching the rear corner every rotation.

Placing the Takeuchi TB range

Here is the range in narrative order. In the one-to-two-ton class, the TB210R is the gate-fit specialist: retractable undercarriage, minimal tail swing, and the footprint to work indoors. The TB216 and the electric TB20e sit just above it, still small enough for the lightest trailers. These machines dig landscape drainage, irrigation, and footings for decks and additions.

The middle of the range, from the TB225 up through the TB235-2, TB240, and TB250-2, is where most general contractors land. These machines balance real trench depth against everyday towability, and the short tail swing TB335R and TB350R serve the same class where working room is tight.
